It’s time Congress acted to make the internet a common-carrier and accessible to everybody on equal terms, regardless of content or viewpoint.

The internet is the town square of modern times. Government should act to preserve it as a place for open public discourse and free expression.

If the big business interests that run ISPs are allowed to restrict data based on content or ability to pay, and if oligarchs and their puppets in high offices are able to influence those limitations, our democracy is in true peril.

I urge Congress to take immediate action to reinstate what the FCC has undone.

We need it. We cannot trust Verizon and its ilk to do the right thing for America.

Gordon Firemark is a Santa Clarita resident.
