The music scene in Santa Clarita is about to take on a new global flavor as the city rolls out its new “SCENES” music series, which will take place at The MAIN theater in Newhall the fourth Friday of every month.
SCENES will explore different music scenes from various cultures, time periods and regions of the globe and is meant as a replacement for the “Sidecar Music Series.” Aside from the musical performances, audiences will be treated to a display of cultural items and instruments in the lobby of the theater, and guests will also have the option to purchase a VIP experience that will include a sampling of cultural food as well as a meet-and-greet with that month’s featured artists.
“SCENES is all about diving into a new music scene each month and broaden the horizons of music lovers in Santa Clarita so they can experience something that they might not have known about,” said Kevin Strauss, a communications specialist with the city of Santa Clarita. “We have so much diversity in Santa Clarita and the surrounding areas so the goal of SCENES is to create a global music concert experience that explores the culture, gives people something that isn’t too mainstream and hopefully encourages them to learn more about it.”
The SCENES series will kick off on Jan. 24 with “A Journey through the Polynesian Islands.” The Santa Clarita-based Kalakeke Pacific Island Dance Company will perform music and dances from Hawaii, Tahiti, New Zealand and Samoa.
“A lot of people in Santa Clarita are very familiar with the Kalakeke Dance Company and that will help us ease them into this event,” Strauss said. “Every time that Kalakeke comes to perform at an event they’re always packing crowds. With this first event we wanted to dive into their background and how their culture is reflected through their music and performance. It’s not about passively listening to their music so much as immersing yourself in their culture.”
The SCENES music series is scheduled to debut on Jan. 24 from 7:30 to 10 p.m. at The MAIN , 24266 Main St., Santa Clarita. General audience tickets are $15 and VIP tickets are $20. February’s theme and guests will be announced later this month at atthemain.org.
