The son of Rob Reiner and his wife has been taken into custody following the deaths of his father and mother, booking records show.
Nick Reiner, 32, was booked on Monday and is being held in lieu of $4 million bail, according to the records from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
The Los Angeles Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment. It it not clear whether Nick Reiner has retained an attorney.
The bodies of Rob and Michele Reiner were found at their home in Brentwood, a neighborhood in Los Angeles, on Sunday afternoon.
“At this time, the Los Angeles Police Department is not seeking anyone as a suspect or as a person of interest or in any other manner, and we will not be doing that until we conduct our investigation and we move forward,” LAPD Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton told reporters on Sunday evening.
Hamilton said that the LAPD’s homicide division would be handling the investigation into the deaths.
The LAPD and Los Angeles Fire Department initially declined to identify the Reiners as the deceased, but California Gov. Gavin Newsom was among the officials who said the couple was found dead.
“Jen and I are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner,” Newsom said in a statement. “Rob will be remembered for his remarkable filmography and for his extraordinary contribution to humanity.”
The Reiner family also issued a statement to news outlets.
“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner,” relatives said. “We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time.”
Rob Reiner, 78, was known for acting in “All in the Family.” He went on to act in, direct, and produce a number of films and series, including “When Harry Met Sally.”
Rob Reiner has said he met Michele, a photographer and his second wife, while filming that 1989 movie. They had three children together, including Nick, who was born in 1991.
Nick Reiner told People magazine in 2016 that he had struggled with drug addiction, and was homeless in multiple states. He said that he experienced “a lot of dark years,” but that he had recovered with assistance in rehab.
Rob Reiner has said that he and his wife regret how they treated their son.
“When Nick would tell us that it wasn’t working for him, we wouldn’t listen. We were desperate and because the people had diplomas on their wall, we listened to them when we should have been listening to our son,” Rob Reiner said at the time, the Los Angeles Times reported.
“We were so influenced by these people. They would tell us he’s a liar, that he was trying to manipulate us. And we believed them,” Michele Reiner said.
