Rom-coms of today, eat your heart out: This week’s feature on Buzz Classic Movies is the 1940 film directed by Howard Hawks, “His Girl Friday,” starring Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell.
The critics’ consensus on Rotten Tomatoes says, “Anchored by stellar performances from Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell, ‘His Girl Friday’ is possibly the definitive screwball romantic comedy.”
The film has earned a 99% “fresh” rating from the critics based on 106 reviews, and a 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes’ “Popcornmeter” based on more than 10,000 ratings.
“When hard-charging New York newspaper editor Walter Burns discovers that his ex-wife, investigative reporter Hildy Johnson, has gotten engaged to milquetoast insurance agent Bruce Baldwin, he unsuccessfully tries to lure her away from tame domestic life with a story about the impending execution of convicted murderer Earl Williams,” says the Rotten Tomatoes summary of the movie. “But when Hildy discovers Williams may be innocent, her reporter instincts take over.”
