The College of the Canyons’ governing board is scheduled to vote in a new board president, vice president and clerk during a special meeting and board retreat on Friday morning.

Friday’s organizational meeting follows the customary annual organizational meeting in December, when trustees failed to come to a deciding vote on a new president after being gridlocked at 2-2.

Current board president Sharlene Johnson, along with board Vice President Fred Arnold, voted “no” for trustee Carlos Guerrero, while Guerrero and trustee Edel Alonso voted “no” for Johnson.

Board clerk Darlene Trevino was absent from the meeting.

The board agreed to postpone the election until all five board members could be present, ensuring a tie vote could be broken. Guerrero will be joining the meeting remotely from Sacramento, according to Friday’s meeting agenda.

Following board elections, trustees will move into a board retreat, intended to give trustees the opportunity to “strengthen working relationships, and reflect collectively on governance roles, board dynamics, and strategic priorities,” according to the agenda.

The organizational meeting is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Both meetings will be held in person at the Takeda Science Center, Room 308, on the college’s Canyon Country campus, 17200 Sierra Highway.
