Winners of the 38th annual California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section – Ford Academic Awards program were announced on March 24, which included 12 student-athletes from six local Santa Clarita Valley high schools announced as “Student-Athlete of the Year.”
“The team awards, based on a cumulative grade point average, are awarded in 29 sports. Entries from 2,667 teams were received this year. Thirty different CIF-SS member schools are represented amongst the team winners,” said a news release from the CIF. “Additionally, 359 student-athletes have been named the individual ‘Student Athlete of the Year’ by their school.”
According to the release, each CIF-SS school could name a male and female “Student-Athlete of the Year” who upheld academic standards during their high school careers, while also receiving a “letter in at least one varsity sport and participating in extracurricular activities.”
The following local seniors were recognized for maintaining a grade point average of 3.5 or higher for the past three years:
- Canyon High School baseball player Matthew Jimenez; 3.97 GPA.
- Canyon High School volleyball player Mallory Lindner; 3.60 GPA.
- Castaic High School cross country, track & field athlete Jeremy Woolley; 3.96 GPA.
- Castaic High School flag football, soccer and track & field athlete Hannah Moses; 4.00 GPA.
- Hart High School baseball player Malachi Wobrock; 4.00 GPA.
- Hart High School basketball player Chloe Judd; 4.00 GPA.
- Santa Clarita Christian School football player Chase Kalinske; 4.00 GPA.
- Santa Clarita Christian School softball and volleyball player Carley Brenner; 4.00 GPA.
- Valencia High School football player Brady Bretthauer; 4.00 GPA.
- Valencia High School softball player Blair Rune; 4.00 GPA.
- West Ranch High School baseball player Trenton Tonthat; 4.00 GPA.
- West Ranch High School tennis player Suprita Yeole; 4.00 GPA.
