When someone applies for and obtains legal citizenship in the U.S., they must make the following pledge called the Oath of Allegiance.

Renunciation of Foreign Allegiance: “I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen.”

You can find this at the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services website.

Could someone please explain to me how and why the U.S. allows people to maintain multiple country citizenships, and is that not a willful case of perjury when accepting and taking the oath required of ALL persons requesting U.S. citizenship when they willfully continue holding citizenship and allegiance to the country they came from?

I personally know a woman who has citizenship in England where she was born, Canada, where she grew up, and the U.S. where she now lives and works.
