A 28-year-old man has been identified as a suspect in a hit-and-run Sunday in Playa Del Rey that killed a toddler and a 25-year-old man.
Oswaldo Sandoval Amaya, 25, died at the scene, while 1-year-old Roger Sandoval Farias died after being taken to a hospital, according to L.A. County Medical Examiner case records. An ABC7 report indicated that Amaya was the toddler’s uncle.
Two others in the car were also taken to a hospital for treatment.
According to MyNewsLA.com, a Los Angeles Police Department detective with the West Traffic Division told City News Service that Moises Rodriguez Leiva, 28, is a suspect in the case, but no other details were available about his arrest. Efforts to confirm that information directly with the LAPD on Friday were unsuccessful.
The crash occurred around 4:30 a.m. Sunday a few blocks away from the coast, according to an LAPD news release published Monday.
According to the release, a white Jeep Cherokee driving south on Vista Del Mar Avenue crossed into opposing traffic, hitting the blue 5-Series BMW carrying four passengers. ABC7 confirmed that Amaya and Farais were the two casualties in the crash.
After the crash, the driver of the Cherokee left the car at the scene and fled on foot, according to the release.
Rodriguez Leiva is in custody as of the publication of this story, with bail set at $4 million, according to the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department inmate locator.
