Question: Good evening, Robert. I’ve never written in and am looking forward to your reply, hoping you’ll have some idea of what we can do to suit the need, without breaking the bank.

Looking to make automated access to our garage overhead space, something like an elevator. We have an oversized garage that has high rafter areas. The previous owners built heavy-duty flooring up there. It’s all reinforced and holds a ton of weight. The problem is, getting up there with anything slightly heavy, and staying safe on the ladder. It’s not easy and I see a fall in the future, if we were to try and put anything heavy up there. Just a simple box of Christmas lights weighs a ton, and this area is perfect storage, so I want to use it — but safely. What can we do to remedy this problem?

Answer: Armando, it’ll all depend on the configuration of your garage. Without photos I can only suggest what may work, given the wall space below the access points to this area. Ideally there is an unobstructed area of wall that is near an access point, where an elevator platform, if you will, could be installed.

There are quality units sold online that will have a rating for the amount of weight intended for it to hold. Be sure to do your research and purchase a motor that is rated high enough for the heaviest options you’d be lifting (including human weight added). You’ll be looking for an overhead electric hoist, tracking guides and then a box frame will need to be built.

You can purchase these things all separately, or for a bit more money there are kits available online as well. Given this involves life-safety, I’d highly recommend doing plenty of research on the load ratings, reviews and the manufacturer. Do this once, do it right, for the safety.

Reach out if you have further questions, and best of luck.
