As the “Safer at Home” order continues to keep Santa Clarita Valley residents home, The MAIN has decided to find a new way to keep them entertained.
Though the theater remains closed, The MAIN has begun offering some of its monthly events virtually, including the “You’re The Best!” talent competition and a now-weekly “10 by 10 Variety Night.”
“There is a lot out there in the world to watch, but it’s nice to be able to support the local folks and give them a venue to share their talent,” said Phil Lantis, the city’s arts and events manager, adding that this gives the community the opportunity to stay connected with one another. “It’s a real win-win.”
10 by 10 Variety Night
The first event to go virtual, 10 by 10 typically gives 10 selected entertainers the chance to take the stage for 10 minutes each for a performance of their choosing, such as magic, comedy, improv, music and more.
About a month ago, Jeff Barber, city arts and events supervisor, put out a call to artists who had previously participated in the variety show.
“The response was so big and so positive from the performers that we’ve actually been doing it every Thursday for the last three weeks,” Lantis added. “People seem to be enjoying it, and it’s a great opportunity to let artists create.”
The next 10 by 10 is scheduled 7 p.m. on April 30 via Facebook Live.
You’re The Best!
In an ongoing talent competition that debuted at The MAIN in January, “You’re The Best!” allows members of the community to showcase their talent and win prizes for it.
Staying virtual, a call for submissions is set to go out monthly, allowing the community to share their talent in a four- to five-minute video.
Then, the public will have the opportunity to view those videos and vote for their favorite, Lantis said.
In a live-streamed finale, Even Steven is expected to announce the winners.
This month, the lineup of contestants includes:
- Joel Brill – Comedy.
- Everly Herrera – Singing.
- Brittany Allison – Hooper.
- Jill Fenimore – Music.
- Adam Wylie – Magician.
- Matt Fernandez – Comedy.
- Jameson Scalia – Impression.
More virtual events are in the works for The MAIN, including play readings and interactive workshops.
