Re: “This Isn’t Ping-Pong,” letters, Nov. 16.

Well, it certainly seems that I got under Nancy Fairbanks’ skin and pushed a few buttons. That’s a good thing.

It also seems that she doesn’t like my particular style.

“Rhetorical jousting and clever reversals — reaction for reaction’s sake.”

Yes, yes and yes.

And, what of it? I don’t need facts to tell someone, anyone, how they came across and the feelings and sentiments they left in their wake. That’s a reality that is completely independent of facts, and everyone has the right to express them.

Think of me as a sort of film critic. I also dabble in food, wine and literature, but some get paid to do what I do for free.

The ingratitude.

Any good student of history knows that, to quote the late, great radio personality, Paul Harvey, “In times like these it helps to recall that there have always been times like these.”

To put it differently, while people are sweating away in “wars on whatever,” people like me are calculating the odds and placing bets on who we think will be the winner.

In short … it IS ping-pong.
