Cancer has been a scourge to mankind. But we now know that the rapid, uncontrolled growth of cells can be caused by mutations.

Technology is advancing quickly, and the ability to pinpoint where a mutation occurs now enables treatment with “targeted therapy.” But not all hospitals use this technology to benefit their patients. This might sound crazy, but you have to ask for it!

We would therefore like to let Santa Claritans know that, if they are facing the possibility of cancer and a biopsy is being performed, they should ask their doctor to have a “comprehensive biomarker analysis” performed on the tissue to check for a mutation. (Other names used include molecular testing, genomic testing or sequencing, mutation testing, or genotyping.) Most large medical institutions automatically conduct these studies, but 50% of smaller community hospitals do not.

Having this testing done can change your life or that of your loved one. So don’t hesitate to ask your doctor for a “comprehensive biomarker analysis” if you or your loved one is facing a cancer diagnosis.
