Canyon Theatre Guild is scheduled this weekend to open “Wait Until Dark,” a psychological thriller written by Frederick Knott and adapted by Jeffrey Hatcher.
The opening performance will feature a free wine and champagne reception for ticket holders one hour before curtain.
Forty-seven years after “Wait Until Dark” premiered on Broadway, Hatcher has adapted Knott’s 1966 original, giving it a new setting. In 1944 Greenwich Village, Susan Hendrix, a blind yet capable woman, is imperiled by a trio of men in her own apartment. As the climax builds, Susan discovers that her blindness just might be the key to her escape, but she and her tormentors must wait until dark to play out this classic thriller’s chilling conclusion.
“At its core, this play is about resilience — about discovering strength when the lights go out, and trust disappears,” Co-Director Linda Thompson said in a news release from the nonprofit theater group. “It’s an intimate thriller that reminds us courage doesn’t require sight, only determination. I’m absolutely thrilled to be working with an incredibly talented cast, and to be bringing this story to life alongside my co-director, Ted Tobin.”
In reviews of previous productions, critics have called the play a classic. “A first-rate shocker … the suspense drama we’ve long awaited eagerly,” wrote a reviewer for the New York Post.
“A classic that still delivers a good scare … delivers a spellbinding final scene that fulfills the promise of the play’s, and the subsequent movie’s, reputation as a classic,” said a review in the New York Times.
“Wait Until Dark” runs through April 25. Showtimes are scheduled 8 p.m. March 20; at 2 p.m. March 21 and 29, and April 4 and 18; and, 7 p.m. March 28, April 11, 12, 19 and 25.
