In his June 9 column, Andrew Taban said things that reminded me of the old saying, “Those who can’t do, teach, and those who can’t teach, teach PE.”
An addendum to that saying would be, “… and those who can’t even teach PE talk big and run for office.”
The first half of his column, wherein Mr. Taban describes the apparently dismal world that has been created by President Donald Trump and Republicans, he could easily have been describing the world that Democrats would create for us. The second half ridicules the notion that socialism is the Republicans’ bogeyman.
The reason I find that funny is because the United States already IS a socialist state. We’re taxed by a government that provides … uh … something in return, right? Well, that’s socialism. What Mr. Taban seems to want is for anyone who makes more than he does to be taxed at much higher rates so that the government can provide people like him with pretty much everything, because actual productivity doesn’t seem to be something Mr. Taban is interested in.
I think what Mr. Taban wants to do is to get elected to an office where he can make that happen. My advice to Mr. Taban is to try getting elected to the board of his own HOA for starters, which is something I myself have actually done. See if you can make a difference in your own neighborhood before you take on the entire world, because until then you’re just someone who talks big, and not much more.
