In a pure democracy, 51% can vote to exterminate the 49%. That’s why we have a republic.
“If you can keep it,” warned Ben Franklin.
Franklin knew the history in which Rome traded a republic for the empire’s bread and circuses. He knew that many — if not most — people lack the fortitude and foresight to protect freedom in the face of facile promises from politicians.
Come to think of it, maybe “Bread And Circuses” should be the new name of the Democratic Party. Except, as their balance sheet shows, they’re all out of bread.
