As the mother of two sons who were killed in a horrific car crash 16 years ago here in Santa Clarita, I know how devastating it is to lose a child and the importance of having the chance to remember them… to see their pictures and hear their names. That’s why as Co-Leader of the Santa Clarita Chapter of The Compassionate Friends support group I want to make sure that the community knows they are invited to join with us as we participate in the 20th Annual Worldwide Candle Lighting to remember all children who have died.
This worldwide event is designed to honor the memories of all children, grandchildren, and siblings regardless of age, who have died for any reason. Our chapter is joining Sunday, December 11, with hundreds of organized memorial services around the world.
Our special service will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the Education Building at the Child & Family Center, 21545 Centre Pointe Pkwy in Santa Clarita. It will feature poems, selected readings, music, a slide show and performances with featured singers. Candles (battery operated) will be provided to all those who attend. After the service, cookies, coffee and hot chocolate will be available.
The holiday season is an extremely difficult time of the year for families grieving the death of a child. For me, even after 16 years I can barely get through those celebratory days. This candle lighting unites bereaved families around the world as a symbolic way of showing the love we continue to carry for our children, even though they can no longer be with us physically.
Please join us so. . .”that their light may always shine.”
