Talk about healing hearts: October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Solidarity Sewing Workshop is holding its annual “Heart Pillow” workshops every Thursday in the month of October from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
With every $20 supplying materials for 12 hearts, Jocelyne Vuillemey and Erika Pigot are spearheading the workshops to donate hundreds of mastectomy pillows to the Sheila R. Veloz Breast Center at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital.
The pillow is designed for patients who have undergone a mastectomy, fitting under the armpit to help reduce any tension and relieve pain from the scar tissue.
“Every heart pillow we sew is a gesture of love and support for a woman recovering from a mastectomy. With the community’s help, we can bring comfort to even more women, one heart at a time,” Vuillemey said. “Last year, our small group of volunteers donated 300 handmade hearts to women recovering from mastectomies. This year, we hope to help even more women — we welcome volunteers to help us sew, donations of fabric, and monetary contributions to purchase fiberfill.”
