Eric Heilbrun: What price democracy?

Editor’s note: The following letter was sent to the four seated Santa Clarita City Council members and copied to The Signal for publication.

I just finished listening to President Obama’s farewell speech. His comments about democracy stirred some thought.

Your collective decision to forego a special election to fill the vacant council seat was due in part to the cost of a special election. I have heard figures ranging from $175,000 to upward of $300,000 as the cost.

So it would appear that you, the council, have put a price tag on democracy and determined the cost to be too great. Apparently in your collective view, there’s a point at which democracy just simply isn’t worth the price.

Shame on you. Shame on all of you.
