In the final week of the regular season, Canyon football picked up a win on Halloween Night and ended the season with two league wins.

The Cowboys defeated the Wildcats, 32-24, and finished fifth in the Foothill League standings ahead of Castaic and West Ranch.

Although the game carried no playoff implications as both teams were outside of the top three in the league standings for an automatic playoff berth, that didn’t prevent the match from being a scoring frenzy.

The teams combined for 36 points with the second half of the game being decided in the last two minutes of the fourth quarter.

Following halftime, the Cowboys (2-8, 2-4) held a 21-18 lead over West Ranch (2-8, 1-5) and surrendered a turnover on downs with two minutes left in the third quarter.

On the next drive, the Wildcats’ offense fumbled the ball, and the Cowboys recovered.

To make matters worse for the Wildcats, Canyon’s offense scored a rushing touchdown and extended its lead to 27-18.

West Ranch didn’t falter and scored another rushing touchdown, cutting into the Cowboys’ lead in the final two minutes of the game.

While the Cowboys could have elected to run the clock out, the team led its offense down field and tallied another touchdown and what would be the final score of the game.

With the win, the Cowboys finished with their second win of the season and recorded one less win than they did last year.

As for West Ranch, the team misses out on its second consecutive postseason after making an appearance in the Division 6 playoffs in 2023.

Both teams finished with a 2-8 overall record but, with the Cowboys owning the tiebreaker, Canyon solidifies its position in the standings over the Wildcats.
