West Ranch boys’ tennis defeats Golden Valley in league opener

West Ranch wins at home over Golden Valley, 12-6; Plus, scores from around the Foothill League in boys’ tennis 

The boys’ tennis season has officially begun, and for high schools in the Santa Clarita Valley, the Foothill League season kicked off on Tuesday and featured prominent games for teams that played. 

The West Ranch Wildcats (1-1, 1-0) kicked off league play with a 12-6 home win over the visiting Golden Valley Grizzlies (1-2, 0-1) with strong play from the singles and doubles side.  

In the first round of singles play, the Wildcats swept the Grizzlies with Ryan Chung, Nathan Quach and Saiya Shrivastav each taking victories. 

Chung took a win again in the second round along with Shrivastav, but it was the Grizzlies’ Rowan Andres that bounced back to record a point for Golden Valley. 

In the third round, Andres tallied another point for the Grizzlies, but the Wildcats finished off singles play with a total score of 7-2 after Chung and Shane Mcmilan took a win in their respective matchups. 

On the doubles side, Golden Valley came out strong with two wins in the first round after the duo of Logan Gunter and Darin Zareno secured a victory. The Grizzlies’ Emaad Islam and Neil Agrawal secured the second point in the first round after a narrow 7-6 win over Sage Correa and Adhith Thevyer of West Ranch.  

In the second round, the Wildcats were back on track after securing two of the three points with the duos of Noah Kim and Isaiah Wong and Inhyeok Hwang and John DePasquale securing their respective wins. 

Despite the doubles win for Grizzlies’ Gunter and Zareno over Hudson Marks and Luke Orwin, the Wildcats secured the overall team victory after two wins in the third round.  

The Grizzlies will look to bounce back from the loss on Thursday, March 5, on the road against the Hart Hawks at Hart High School with first set scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.  

The Wildcats will look to continue their winning momentum on the road against the Coyotes at Castaic High School Thursday with the first game set to begin at 3 p.m.  

After Tuesday’s games, here are scores from around the Foothill League:  

Saugus 16, Castaic 2: The Centurions opened league play with a 16-2 road win over the Coyotes at Castaic High School.  

In the singles side, Centurions’ Grant Schlotfelt swept all his matches in the three rounds to win 6-1, 6-0, 6-0. And on the doubles side, the Centurions swept the second and third rounds to win 8-1 with the lone Castaic win coming from the pair of Adrien Boyles and Andrew Daniel.  

The Centurions look to keep up their winning play with a home matchup against the visiting Canyon Cowboys on Thursday with the first game set to begin at 3 p.m.  

As for Castaic, the Coyotes will look to win back at home against the visiting West Ranch Wildcats on Thursday with the games set to begin at 3 p.m.  

Hart 15, Canyon 3: The Hart Hawks had a strong showing in Tuesday’s league win over the Cowboys.  

The Hawks’ singles side swept the competition to win 9-0 throughout all three rounds. And in the doubles side, the Cowboys’ pair of Gustavo Cordova and Nicholas Jung secured a first-round win to secure a point for Canyon while the duo of David Gutierrez and Dominic Bustos Garcia secured a victory in the second round.  

By the end, the Hawks took the overall win, 15-3, and will look to take victory again on Thursday at Valencia High School against the Vikings at 3 p.m.  

As for Canyon, the Cowboys match up against the Centurions at Saugus High School Thursday with the first serve set to begin at 3 p.m.
