Bill Bedgood, who retired from coaching following the conclusion of the 2023-24 season, has been named as the next head coach of the Valencia boys’ basketball program, according to Valencia High School Principal Kullen Welch.
In a statement sent to The Signal, Welch said that Bedgood is “coming out of retirement” and will help lay a foundation for the future of Valencia basketball.
“We are proud to announce the appointment of Bill Bedgood as the new head coach of the boys basketball program,” reads the statement. “Coach Bedgood, a familiar and highly respected figure in the Valencia community, returns to lead the program after previously serving as head coach and helping build a strong tradition of excellence.”
The decision comes after Greg Fontenette stepped down as the head coach following the end of the 2025-26 season.
Bedgood was named interim coach after Fontenette stepped down, and Welch has confirmed that Bedgood will remain at the helm of the program.
“Coach Bedgood is the right person at the right time for our program. His connection to Valencia, his experience, and his commitment to developing young men align perfectly with our vision for the future of Valencia basketball,” according to the statement.
In Bedgood’s tenure as Valencia’s head coach from 2017 to 2024, the Vikings won the 2023 California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section championship, SoCal regional championship, and Division 4A state title.
“Valencia High School looks forward to the continued success of the boys basketball program under coach Bedgood’s leadership and is confident in the direction of Viking basketball moving forward,” reads the statement.
