Valencia boys’ tennis secures road win over Saugus

Plus, scores from around the Foothill League

After a road win over the Hart Hawks on Tuesday, the Valencia Vikings tennis team followed up its performance with a 14-4 win over the Centurions at Saugus High School on Thursday.  

In singles play, the Vikings (8-7, 6-2) narrowly defeated the Centurions (7-6, 4-4), 5-4, after three rounds. And in the third round of singles play, the Vikings swept the Centurions across the three matchups, 6-0, 6-4, 6-2.  

Valencia’s Stephen Hernandez had the biggest day for the Centurions in singles play as he won two out of his three matchups, 6-0, 6-0.  

In doubles play, the Vikings defeated the Centurions, 9-0, and swept the Grizzlies to secure the overall team win.  

In the first round, the Vikings’ pair of Joel Priesz and Logan Murray had the biggest day for Valencia as they defeated their respective matchups, 6-0, 6-2.  

With the overall win, the Vikings improved to 6-2 in league play and recorded their eighth win of the season.  

The Vikings will look to build upon their momentum on Tuesday with a home matchup against the Castaic Coyotes with the first serve set for 3 p.m.  

The loss dropped the Centurions to 4-4 in league play and they will look to bounce back on Tuesday at home against the visiting West Ranch Wildcats with the first serve set for 3 p.m.  

After Thursday’s games, here are scores from around the Foothill League:  

West Ranch 16, Canyon 2: The West Ranch Wildcats (9-1, 9-0) secured their ninth league win of the season with a victory over the Canyon Cowboys (2-12, 1-8). 

The Wildcats remain in first place in the Foothill League standings and will look to keep up the recent momentum with a road matchup on Tuesday against the Saugus Centurions with the first serve set for 3 p.m.  

Golden Valley 17, Castaic 1: The Grizzlies (10-3, 6-2) recorded their sixth league win of the season with a road victory over the Castaic Coyotes (1-14, 0-8).  

The Grizzlies are in second place in the Foothill League standings with a 6-2 record and hold the tiebreaker over the Valencia Vikings, who have a 6-2 league record.  

The Grizzlies play again on Tuesday at home against the visiting Hart Hawks while the Coyotes will look to bounce back on the road against the Valencia Vikings.  

Both games are scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
