Valencia boys’ volleyball secures first-round sweep over Kennedy

After Valencia secured the Foothill League title during the regular season, the Vikings took a straight-set sweep Wednesday, 25-19, 25-20, 25-20, over the Kennedy Fighting Irish of La Palma and advanced to the second round of the boys’ volleyball Division 3 playoffs.  

With the win, the Vikings advanced to the second-round in the Division 3 California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section playoffs.  

It’s the second season in a row Valencia has advanced past the first round as the Vikings will look to win again in the second round.  

The Vikings are set to host their second-round matchup as the visiting Claremont Wolfpack comes into town off a four-set win over Murrieta Valley in the first round.  

The matchup between the Wolfpack and Vikings is set to begin at 6 p.m. at Valencia High School on Friday.  

After Wednesday’s games, here are scores from the first round:  

Saugus 3, Newbury Park 1: For the third straight season, the Centurions have advanced to the second round of the CIF playoffs after a four-set home win over the Newbury Park Panthers in the Division 3 playoffs.  

With the win, the Centurions are set to hit the road for their second-round matchup and head down to Los Angeles for a contest against the Windward Wildcats. 

The Wildcats are coming off a straight-set sweep in the first round over South Pasadena on Wednesday.  

The matchup between the Wildcats and Centurions is set to begin at 6 p.m. at Windward High School on Friday.  

Trinity Classical Academy 3, Canyon Springs 0: In what has been a historic season for the Knights after the program won its first-ever Heritage League title, the success continued in the playoffs with a first-round straight-set sweep over the Canyon Springs Cougars of Moreno Valley.  

With the first-round win in the Division 7 playoffs, the Knights hit the road for the second round with a contest against the La Sierra Academy Knights of Riverside.  

The matchup between the Knights and Trinity Classical Academy is set to begin at 6 p.m. at La Sierra Academy on Friday.  

Flintridge Prep 3, Castaic 0: After the Castaic boys’ volleyball team secured its first-ever postseason bid in school history, the Coyotes fell in the first round in straight sets to the Flintridge Prep Wolves at home.  

With the loss, the Coyotes are eliminated from the Division 5 playoffs.  

Foothill 3, Canyon 0: After a third-place finish in the Foothill League, the Cowboys fell in the first round of the Division 3 playoffs to the Foothill Knights of Santa Ana.  

With the loss, the Cowboys are eliminated from the Division 3 playoffs.
