Boys’ tennis first-round roundup: 3 teams advance, West Ranch falls

After the first round of the boys’ tennis California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section playoffs, three teams from the Santa Clarita Valley advanced to the second round whilethe West Ranch Wildcats fell out of the postseason in a road loss to St. Francis.  

Here are the scores from Wednesday’s opening round:  

St. Francis 12, West Ranch 6: The Wildcats, who won the regular-season Foothill League title, were defeated in the first round of the Division 4 playoffs by the St. Francis Golden Knights of La Cañada. 

In the loss, the Wildcats secured four wins in singles play but only recorded two victories in doubles play from the pairings of Inhyeok Hwang and Daniel Lee and Logan Hindes and Isaiah Wong.  

With the loss, the Wildcats are eliminated from the playoffs.  

Golden Valley 10, Laguna Blanca 8: The Grizzlies, who ended the regular season in second place in the Foothill League standings, secured a narrow road win over the Laguna Blanca Owls of Santa Barbara in the Division 5 playoffs.  

With the win, the Grizzlies advanced to the second round and will be on the road with a matchup against the La Mirada Matadores.  

The matchup between the Grizzlies and Matadores is set to begin at 3 p.m. on Friday at La Mirada High School.  

Valencia 16, Vista Del Lago 2: The Vikings secured a big first-round win in the Division 5 playoffs and advanced to the second round after a home victory over the Vista Del Lago Ravens of Moreno Valley.  

In the win, the Vikings swept all three rounds of doubles play and went 7-2 in singles to secure the overall win over the Ravens. And with the win, the Vikings will hit the road and matchup against the Flintridge Prep Wolves of La Cañada.  

The matchup between the Wolves and Vikings is set to begin at 3 p.m. on Friday.  

Saugus 12, San Dimas 6: The Centurions, who had the pairing of Grant Schlotfelt and Joaquin Veizaga win the Foothill League doubles tournament, secured a big first-round win over the San Dimas Saints in the Division 7 playoffs.  

The Centurions had their strongest showing in singles play as the Saugus boys’ tennis team went 7-2 and secured five more wins in doubles to record the overall win.  

With the win, the Centurions will host their second-round matchup and welcome the Coachella Valley Arabs.  

The matchup between the Centurions and Arabs is set to begin at 3 p.m. at Saugus High School on Friday.
