The Alzheimer’s Association says roughly one in nine people age 65 and older have Alzheimer’s disease. More than 7 million Americans are living with the disease.
Around the world, Alzheimer’s Disease International indicates there are more than 55 million people living with dementia. Alzheimer’s disease gradually damages and destroys neurons in the brain. These changes can begin 20 years or more before memory loss and other symptoms develop.
Unfortunately, Alzheimer’s disease is ultimately fatal, although several modifiable risk factors exist for dementia that, if addressed, may delay the onset of symptoms.
