Last month the Lincoln Club hosted a meet-and-greet for Herb Morgan, who is running for California state controller.
I had no idea who he was or what he stood for. He was very impressive — and I urge you to consider him when you vote next November.
When Herb gave his presentation, he invited everybody in the room to look at his campaign finance account bank statements live, in real time, on his website. Right then and there. He created his own app to accomplish this. Everyone in the room was so impressed and thought this was a stellar idea!
In light of recent news locally, it would be beneficial for all nonprofits to make all their financials available online on their own websites. This could include bank statements and tax returns for donors and members of the public to view.
Financial accountability matters and it will give the donor population as well as the general public peace of mind knowing their money is actually benefitting the intended recipients. As the old public service announcement stated in the 1980s, “The More You Know.”
