With all of the hoopla surrounding the gerrymandering issue, in California I decided to look up some statistics and see just how California voters are represented in Congress. My findings indicate that Democrats are already lopsided in their representation.
Here’s how California voters are registered (Source: California Secretary of State): Democrats:10.37 million (45.27%); Republicans: 5.78 million (25.22%); independents/other: 6.76 million (29.5%).
Here’s how many representatives California has in Congress: Democrats: 43 (82.7%); Republican: 9 (17.3%). The only way something like this could happen is if all of the independents and even some of the Republicans were being represented by Democrats.
How is this democratic? How is this fair representation? California is, politically speaking (much like Massachusetts), a Democratic dictatorship. The hoopla surrounding the whole gerrymandering thing has nothing to do with protecting Democratic congressional seats from predatory Republicans. It has to do with gaining five more Democratic seats in the House to erase the Republicans’ slim majority. Fine. I have no problem with the idea, per se. I have a problem with the way it’s being marketed with lies, with Gov. Gavin Newsom as the head of the trumpet section.
