Elaine Smith poses a perplexing question (letters, Oct. 8). She’s retired, in good health, has no extra money, but wants to help get rid of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and other groups destroying our country. Well, Ms. Smith, you could join an advocacy group, go a step further and become an activist, or you could do the ultimate: Write a letter to your congressman. Anyway, you’ll spend lots of time and energy, very little to no money, get to know lots of “interesting” people, and you might even enjoy the experience. Whether or not you’ll help accomplish anything is anyone’s guess, but you’ll play a role, play a part in something.

So, as our political science professor told all of us, don’t just sit there complaining, get up and get involved, in something, in ANYTHING.

Good luck to you, Ms. Smith.
