I disagreed with President Joe Biden’s pardon of his son, Hunter Biden. Still, I understood why a parent would want to protect their child from a prison sentence and the prospect of further federal criminal prosecution.
What I don’t understand is President Donald Trump’s pardon of former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez, who was found guilty by an American jury last year of conspiring to import cocaine into the United States. During his trial, a federal prosecutor alleged Hernandez once boasted at a meeting with narco-traffickers that “together they were going to shove the drugs right up the noses of the gringos.”
The federal judge in the case called Hernandez “a two-faced politician hungry for power” who masqueraded as an anti-drug crusader while partnering with traffickers.
Can someone from MAGA please help me make sense of this? Seriously, I’ll try to keep an open mind, but pardoning a high-profile convicted drug trafficker while at the same time blowing up suspected drug smuggling boats in the Caribbean is beyond me. A Drug Enforcement Administration agent who worked on the investigation called the pardon “lunacy.”
