A quote from one participant at the conservative rally (article) published on Jan. 20 was, “bettering our country and restoring it to the ideals that it was founded upon.” But what specifically does that mean?

Does restoring ideals mean return to slavery, displacing indigenous populations, denying a woman’s right to vote and land ownership? Weren’t those common ideals when the Declaration of Independence was adopted?

Another quote from another rally goer was: “It’s fine to have freedom of speech, but you can’t attack law enforcement. You can’t be talking against the president constantly.”

But weren’t those ideals this country was founded upon? Didn’t the colonists denounce, revolt and fight battle after battle against the loyalists and the king of England?

Imagine if those pesky 13 colonies didn’t attack, disobey and declare their independence. Isn’t it one ideal that not only is it our right to question our government, but it is our duty, our obligation to do so?

So, please enlighten me, what does restoring the ideals our country was founded on really mean?
