I wrote, “True Power quietly does the work. It ignores the unchangeable past to build a better future,” after I attended an event several nights ago where I heard Sheriff Robert Luna speak. This was my first time I had heard him.

He spoke of his department, saying there are challenges and that he is working to fix them. He was open, friendly and answered everyone’s questions without hesitation. He came with one other person and not a bodyguard entourage to isolate himself.

He never mentioned his troubled predecessor or the mess he inherited from the man.

Sheriff Luna looks forward.

There was one exception where Sheriff Luna did refer to his predecessor.

Sheriff Luna said he will refuse any contribution to his campaign coming from any member of his department, which is contrary to the policy that preceded Sheriff Luna.

Toward the end of the meeting, he mentioned being with the Long Beach Police Department for 36 years with seven as chief. It is obvious he is in this because he loves what he is doing. He is not using this as a stepping stone.
