Although I am generally an optimistic person who tries to view things in a positive light, I must admit that recent news regarding artficial intelligence is quite alarming and unnerving.
It reminds me of when Donald Trump downplayed the COVID-19 pandemic — and we all saw the consequences of that situation.
Now Trump says AI doesn’t need guardrails, it only needs a president with a high IQ.
The White House renegades are at odds with the growing public skepticism concerning the AI situation. In recent days some AI researchers have shocked the world when they publicly acknowledged that there is “a new zero chance” of AI killing off humanity in the next decade. The AI “doomsday fears” have become more powerful and embedded in our lives these last few days.
Three things can be true about AI: Fear, excitement and interest. AI is in the throes of doing some very good things, including accelerating drug development and predicting disease risk.
The bottom line is that no one can accurately guess the odds of an “AI Doomsday,” although scientists are sounding the alarm that the chances of an “AI Doomsday” are real.
AI companies are already building emergency brakes to stop AI systems before AI can cause serious damage.
Let us hope that these emergency brakes by some of the AI companies will work to curtail this “AI Doomsday” situation.
